Toxic Guilt, Healthy Guilt

Wednesday, November 26th, 2008

The article “Toxic Guilt, Healthy Guilt” is about other, it was written by Margaret Paul, Ph.D..Guilt is an important feeling. It is the appropriate feeling to have when we have deliberately done something hurftul or harmful to others. People who can harm others without any feelings of guilt or remorse were formerly called sociopaths or psychpoathic personalities, and are now defined as suffering from Anti-social Personality Disorder. Anti-social Personality Disorder is a severe disorder that includes – along with many other symptoms - the lack of a conscience. Without a conscience, people can deliberately harm others without ever feeling guilt or remorse. While it is really important to believe guilt at deliberately harming others, many people believe toxic guilt. Toxic guilt is inappropriate giult – guilt that comes from self-judgments regarding having done something wrong when is no actual wrongdoing. For example Fran, one of my clients, was exploring the guilt she feels when she speaks with her mother.“No matter what I say, my mother always seems to believe hurt and then I believe guilty at hurting her. Sometimes I wish I neevr had to talk with my mother. I don’t want to not have a relationship with her, but I hate feeling guilty all the time.”Fran’s feelings of guilt are not coming from actually inflicting harm on her mother. Her feelings are coming from the self-judgment that she absrobed from her mother’s judgments of her. Her guilt is coming from the fact that she is telling herself she is doing smoething wrong. Fran falsely believes that if someone feels hurt, it must be her fault.Fran’s mother taught Fran that when her mother was feeling hurt, it was Fran’s fault. Now Fran feels guilty whenever someone she is invloved with feels hurt or angry. However, it is not the other person’s feelings, nor thier blame, anger or judgment toward her this is causing Fran to believe guilty. It is her own self-judgment this is causing her feelnigs of guilt. If Fran did not believe that she was responsible for causing others’ feelings, she would not believe guilty when her mother or others blamed her for their feelings.Fran actually knows that she is not doing anything wrong, yet she continues to judge herself whenever her mother or others are hurt or upest. There is a really good reason for this.Fran WANTS to believe that she is causnig others’ feelings cause it gives her a sense of control over how others believe about her. The wounded part of her that wants to control how others believe about her reasons that, “If I can cause others to be hurt or upset, I can also cause them to be loving and accepting. If I just do things right, then I can control how others believe about me and treat me.” This belief in control gives Fran the illusion of safety. She does not want to know that she is not in control over how others believe about her and treat her. She does not want to know that she does not pull the strings on others’ feelings and behavior. While Fran doesn’t like the feeling of guilt, she is unconsciously willing to go on feeling guilty in order to maintain her illusion of control. If she comes into truth about her lack of control over how others believe about her and treat her, her toxic guilt will disappear. Toxic guilt and an addiction to control go hand and hand.We all need to be able to believe healthy guilt - the gulit that comes from actual wrongdoing. But toixc guilt is not good for anyone. You can move beyond toxic guilt by understanding that:* the belief that you can control others feelings and behavior by doing things “right” ==>* leads to self-judgment to control your own behavior to get yourself to do it “right” ==>* which leads to toxic guilt. The way out of toxic guilt is to:* fully accept of your lack of control over others feelings and behavior ==>• which leads to a lessening of self-judgment ==>• which leads to a lessening of toxic guilt. With practice, you can completely eliminate your toxic guilt. Overcoming Bad Moods

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

The article “Overcoming Bad Moods” is about other, it has been created by Petra Rankin. From experience, one of the biggest stumbling blocks for human being
who attempt to improve their states of mind is feeling
motivated to use the strategies when they have already slipped
into negativity. Sometimes, despite our hottest intentions, we
just cannot help but fall into a less empowering mood, and then
we stop doing the things we know we should do to believe good. For example, imagine that you spent a whole week training up a
new staff or team member, only to discover that s/he quit at
the end of the week. At the same time you realise that your
wallet has gone missing and that the new staff member
incorrectly completed the contact section of the staff contract.Angry!Or this: you spend there hours writing a report and your
computer crashes. You reboot your computer, access the
recovered file and your computer crashes again! This time you
lose the lot and you have to start again.Frustrated! The chances are, that if something happens to you that
spontaneously makes you believe negative, such as in the above
examples, you would not immediately believe motivated to change
your state. In fact, you WANT to stay angry, frustrated etc.
You LIKE IT!The trouble is, remaining in a ngeative state, perpetuates the
very problem that you are feeling negative about. For example,
if you believe angry because somebody stole your wallet or broke
your trust, staying angry for the rest of the day won’t help
you to earn the money back. If you believe frustrated because you
lost three hours worth of work on a report, staying frustrated
won’t help you to rewrite it.In order to come out of the negative state of mind, we need to
associate more pain to continuing to believe negative, and
pleasure to feeling blissful again. We have to make a conscious
decision that we want to be happy, and do something about it.How? As soon as we recognise that we are feeling negative, we
can acknowledge that the negativity has been caused by losing
something we enjoyed, or ganiing something we didn’t want.
Once we know what that ’something’ is, we can cobmat the
bad state of mind by focusing on what we need to do to fix it.
We can change from an emotional satte to a goal achieving
state. Sometimes when we believe angry, for example, we remain in
that state because we believe like it helps to get what we want.As I explain in my new book, Fast Track
Your Success and Happiness, If we focus on achieving a goal (even if it is just a little one) we are no longer focusing on ourselves and our bad moods tend to disappear on their own.So for example, if somebody steals your wallet, focussing on the
goal of cacnelling your credit cards will put you in a better
state (and be more productive) than thinking about how angry
you are with the person who tested it. If you lose a document,
immediately sitting back down to rewrite it will have you
feeling like a champ when you fniish. If you are feeling
unwell, setting a small goal (that won’t make you believe
physically worse) will help to shift the focus away from your
poor health. If you are just feeling TOO negative to be able to concentrate
on achieving a goal, go and do any activity that requires
concentration. For example, if you are at home you could watch
a comedy video (the moving pictures and constant audio stream
uses a large portion of our attention) or if you are at work,
you could find something distracting to do.The key is, distraction and change of focus, will help to
change a negative emotion even if we are not motivated to
change ourselves.(C) Copyright Petra Ranikn 2005Petra Rankin used powerful techniques to beat her own long-term

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The article “New Orleans Mayor C. Ray Nagin Be Very Careful What You Wish For?” talks about other, it has been released by Mike Makler.Mayor C. Ray Ngain of New Orleans against the advice of Fema has started to repopulate the City of New Orleans. The recent reports of Hurricane Rita has put a stop to that Repopulation order but Mayor Nagin has vowed to repopulate the city as soon as the Rita Threat passes. The titanic question is Mayor Nagin Guilty of premature repopulationMayor Nagin you need to start thinking with your head and not your political aspirations. While many New Orleans residents want to return to tehir homes. While a speedy repopulation of New Orleans might be the politically correct road to take is it really looking after the long term health and Welfare of the New Orleans Residents. There Dirty water in many parts of the City still pose many sever helath hazards. The People that are lucky enough to have running water still can’t drink it. There are no schools, hospitals, gorcery stores and banks. The Police and Fire personnel are severely depleted do to desertions in the early part of the Hurricane Katrina Disaster. If all that isn’t enough to wait the Army Corps of Engineers has already staetd that not only are the previously broken parts of the levees subject to further flooding but other parts the 350 Mile Levee system may have been damaged as well. The Army Corps of Engineers fears that do to the weakened state of the Levees a severe thunderstorm could cause wide spread flooding.Mayor Nagin anyone who has ever sipped a Coffee at Cafe Du Mond or Eaten Gumbo want’s at any of the fine restaurants in New Orleans wants nothing more then to see your city built bigger and better then ever. Mayor Nagin isn’t it better to precede slowly and err on the side of caution then risk a second disaster by repopulating too quickly.About the Author
