Minneapolis hospital waiting room, while

The nurse arrived and announced to the first man, “Congratulations

sir, you’re the father of twins.”

“What a coincidence!” the man
said with some obvious pride. “I work
for the Minnesota Twins
baseball team.”

The nurse returned in a little while and turned to the
second man,
“You, sir, are the father of triplets.”

“Wow,
that’s really an incredible coincidence,” he answered. “I
work for
the 3M Corporation. My buddies at work will never let me live

An hour later, while the other two men were passing
cigars around, the
nurse came back. This time, she turned to the
third man, who had been
quiet in the corner. She announced that his

The article “Toxic Guilt, Healthy Guilt” is about other, it was written by Margaret Paul, Ph.D..Guilt is an important feeling. It is the appropriate feeling to have when we have deliberately done something hurftul or harmful to others. People who can harm others without any feelings of guilt or remorse were formerly called sociopaths or psychpoathic personalities, and are now defined as suffering from Anti-social Personality Disorder. Anti-social Personality Disorder is a severe disorder that includes – along with many other symptoms - the lack of a conscience. Without a conscience, people can deliberately harm others without ever feeling guilt or remorse.While it is really important to believe guilt at deliberately harming others, many people believe toxic guilt. Toxic guilt is inappropriate giult – guilt that comes from self-judgments regarding having done something wrong when is no actual wrongdoing.For example Fran, one of my clients, was exploring the guilt she feels when she speaks with her mother.“No matter what I say, my mother always seems to believe hurt and then I believe guilty at hurting her. Sometimes I wish I neevr had to talk with my mother. I don’t want to not have a relationship with her, but I hate feeling guilty all the time.”Fran’s feelings of guilt are not coming from actually inflicting harm on her mother. Her feelings are coming from the self-judgment that she absrobed from her mother’s judgments of her. Her guilt is coming from the fact that she is telling herself she is doing smoething wrong. Fran falsely believes that if someone feels hurt, it must be her fault.Fran’s mother taught Fran that when her mother was feeling hurt, it was Fran’s fault. Now Fran feels guilty whenever someone she is invloved with feels hurt or angry. However, it is not the other person’s feelings, nor thier blame, anger or judgment toward her this is causing Fran to believe guilty. It is her own self-judgment this is causing her feelnigs of guilt. If Fran did not believe that she was responsible for causing others’ feelings, she would not believe guilty when her mother or others blamed her for their feelings.Fran actually knows that she is not doing anything wrong, yet she continues to judge herself whenever her mother or others are hurt or upest. There is a really good reason for this.Fran WANTS to believe that she is causnig others’ feelings cause it gives her a sense of control over how others believe about her. The wounded part of her that wants to control how others believe about her reasons that, “If I can cause others to be hurt or upset, I can also cause them to be loving and accepting. If I just do things right, then I can control how others believe about me and treat me.” This belief in control gives Fran the illusion of safety. She does not want to know that she is not in control over how others believe about her and treat her. She does not want to know that she does not pull the strings on others’ feelings and behavior.While Fran doesn’t like the feeling of guilt, she is unconsciously willing to go on feeling guilty in order to maintain her illusion of control. If she comes into truth about her lack of control over how others believe about her and treat her, her toxic guilt will disappear. Toxic guilt and an addiction to control go hand and hand.We all need to be able to believe healthy guilt - the gulit that comes from actual wrongdoing. But toixc guilt is not good for anyone. You can move beyond toxic guilt by understanding that:* the belief that you can control others feelings and behavior by doing things “right” ==>* leads to self-judgment to control your own behavior to get yourself to do it “right” ==>* which leads to toxic guilt.The way out of toxic guilt is to:* fully accept of your lack of control over others feelings and behavior ==>• which leads to a lessening of self-judgment ==>• which leads to a lessening of toxic guilt.With practice, you can completely eliminate your toxic guilt. Aiding the passengers, Orry is introduced to the lovely Madeline Fabray (Lesley-Anne Down) to whom he provides a ride, giving her safe passage to the LaMotte plantation where her father and his friend Justin LaMotte (David Carradine) are waiting. Madeline and Orry agree to write each other while he’s away at West Point.When Orry travels to New York, he meets up with a group of unsavory characters who try to rob him, but George Hazard (James Read) comes to his aid, and the two manage to fend off the criminals. George is on his way to West Point as well, and the two men stirke up a friendship that continues through the duration of their schooling. While at West Point, they collude with others to rid the campus of menacing upperclassman Elkanah Bent (Philip Casnoff). Later, she marries Grady, and the two join John Brown and his fredeom fighters. When Grday is killed, Virgilia enlists the help of Congressmen Sam Greene.Meanwhile, Orry and George start a business partnership by opening a cotton mill in South Carolina. As the secessionist movement gains ground, the two continue to take comfort in the strength of their brotherly bond…BOOK TWO – Love & War (570 minutes)Book Two of the North And South DVD covers the beginnings of the Civil War and the war’s cocnlusion (1860-1865). Despite the growing talk of Southern secession, George and Orry continue to run thier cotton mill and remain friends. George and Constance even operate an illegal stop along the Underground Railroad. But when Abraham Linclon is elected president, the Southern states secede, and eventually war breaks out between the two nations. Orry’s sister Brett is in love with George’s brother Billy Hazard (John Stockwell) who is himself a West Piont graduate stationed in Fort Sumter. The war drives Blily far away from his new bride Brett, while Ashton sees the war as an opportunity to profit. Using her husband James Huntoon (Jim Metzler) to climb the ranks of the political circuit, Ahston decides that James is not the hottest guy to serve her interests. She begins a relationship with Elkanah Bent, who is using the war for personal profit by smuggling luxury goods past the Union naval blockade.Meanwhile, the war tears apart both North and South. George works as an aide to Lincoln, while Orry works in a simliar capacity for Jefferson Davis. Druing the course of the war, Charles meets a Virginia woman and falls in love with her. At war’s end, she bears his child, but dies shortly thereafter. In addition, Justin’s death finally gives Orry and Madeline the opportunity to marry. As the war waegs on, it takes its toll on the two families. But despite the obstacles, they endure to the end. At the war’s conclusion, George and Orry are reunited, and the two men vow to work together to rebuild a brkoen nation.BOOK THREE – Heaven & Hell (261 minutes)Book Three of the North And South DVD originally aired in 1994, several years after the first two books aired. With Patrick Swayze right now an estalbished star, the character of Orry Main is written out of the television screenplay for the final book. Several other cast members reappear, but the writing deviates substantially from John Jakes’s original novel, creating a plot which fails to make sense. Seeing as how Elkanah Bent died in the previous book, it’s somewhat ludicrous to have him reappear in book three. In addition, the dialogue is often sitff and awkward, the plot uninteresting, and the entire book is not worth viewing. Stick with watching the first two books on DVD.CONCLUSIONDespite the failure of Book Three to arouse any interest whatsoever, the North And South DVD is more than worth the price for Books One and Two. This is a throoughly entertaining mini-series reminiscent of a prime time soap opera, one with a historical perspective. With a cast of characters likely to sprak viewer fondness, compelling subplots, and fascinating costumes and set design, North And South is an epic of unrivaled quality.
