A boat
docked in a tiny Mexican
village. An American tourist complimented the
Mexican fisherman on
the quality of his fish and asked how long it took
him to catch
them.
“Not very long,” answered the Mexican.
“But then, why
didn’t you stay out longer and catch more?” asked the
tourist.
The Mexican explained that his small catch was sufficient to meet
his
needs and those of his family.
The tourist asked, “So
what do you do with the rest of your time?”
“I sleep late, fish a
little, play with my children, spend time with
my wife… In the
evenings I go into the village to see my friends, have
a few drinks,
play the guitar, chase the senioras, and sing a few
songs. I have a
full life.”
The tourist said, “I have a M.B.A. from Stanford and
I can help you.
You should start by fishing longer every day. You
can then sell the
extra fish you catch. With the extra revenue
, you can buy a bigger boat.
With the extra money the larger boat
will bring, you can buy a second one
and a third one and so on
until you have an entire fleet of trawlers.
Instead of selling your
fish to a middle man, you can negotiate directly
with the processing
plants and maybe even open your own plant. You can
then leave this
little village and move to Mexico City, Los Angeles, or
even New
Jersey! From there you can direct your huge enterprise.”
“How long
would that take?” asked the Mexican.
“Twenty, perhaps
twenty-five years,” replied the tourist.
“And after that?” asked the
Mexican.
“Afterwards? That’s when it gets really interesting,”
answered the
tourist, laughing. “When your business gets really big, you
can start
selling stocks and make millions!”
“Millions?
Really?” asked the Mexican. “And after that?”
The tourist replied,
“After that you’ll be able to retire, live in a
tiny village n
ear the coast, sleep late, play with your children, catch
a few
fish, spend time with your wife, and spend your evenings drinking
and
playing the guitar with your friends!” Jewelry Jewelry Duamond Solitaire Stud Earrings 14K White Gold 10 Carat Ctw.

The article “North And South (DVD) Review” is about movies, it has been released by Britt Gillette.Based on the best-selling novels by John Jakes, North And South premiered as a highly celebrated and critically acclaimed television series in 1985. In the spirit of Gone With The Wind, the novels cover 19th Century America before, during, and after the Civil War. As with the Margaret Mitchell classic, Jakes creates a larger-than-life cast of characters to tell his story of struggle between a Union of States divided on the issues of human bondage and states rights, loyalty to ones nation and loyalty to the state in which one was born, along with innumerable interpersonal conflicts lost in the sands of time
To tell his story, Jakes uses two families, the Hazard family of Pennsylvania and the Main family of South Carolina.Boasting a star-studded cast, Notrh And South is over 1000 minutes of riveting drama. Multiple discs cover the Civil War era with breathtaking cinematography, realistic settings, and the ever-increasing cauldron of conflict between North and South. You wont want to miss this truly amazing series. The North And South DVD covers all three books from the popular series, each a multi-disc set
Below is a less than comprehensive summary of each book.
(Be Warned that the summaries below contain some plot spoilers)BOOK ONE North & South (561 minutes)Book One of the North And South DVD covers the period piror the Civil War (1844-1860). Eighteen-year-old Orry Main (Patrick Swayze) prepares to leave his South Carolina plantation en route to West Point when he encounters an overturned carriage while leaving town. Aiding the passengers, Orry is introduced to the lovely Madeline Fabray (Lesley-Anne Down) to whom he provides a ride, giving her safe passage to the LaMotte plantation where her father and his friend Justin LaMotte (David Carradine) are waiting. Madeline and Orry agree to write each other while hes away at West Point. When Orry travels to New York, he meets up with a group of unsavory characters who try to rob him, but George Hazard (James Read) comes to his aid, and the two manage to fend off the criminals. George is on his way to West Point as well, and the two men stirke up a friendship that continues through the duration of their schooling. While at West Point, they collude with others to rid the campus of menacing upperclassman Elkanah Bent (Philip Casnoff). The vindictive cadet vows revenge, and he gets it when George and Orry are placed under his command at a battle during the Mexcian War. Bent sends the two men and their comrades into certain death, only to have his plan foiled by a Mexican retreat. While fighting in Mexico, George meets his future wife Constance Flynn (Wendy Kilbourne). Meanwhile, Orry and Madeline experience a personal hell when Madelines father hides Orrys letters from West Point. Thinking that Orry has forgotten about her, Madeilne agrees to marry Justin LaMotte, who treats her horribly. With Orry and Madeline continuing their love affair in secret, George and Orry continue their friendship. The etnire Main family, including Orrys sisters Ashton (Terri Garber) and Brett (Genie Francis) as well as Main cousin Charles (Lewis Smith), travel to Pennsylvania as guests of the Hazard family. While in the North, the Mains are confronted by Georges abolitionist sister Virgilia (Kirstie Alley) and the differences between the North and South dominate the discussion, but George and Orrys friendship continues unabated as they decide not to discuss such matters. When the Mains return the favor and invite the Hazards to South Carolina, Virgiila creates a ruckus by aiding in the escape of Grady, a neighbors slave. Later, she marries Grady, and the two join John Brown and his fredeom fighters. When Grday is killed, Virgilia enlists the help of Congressmen Sam Greene.Meanwhile, Orry and George start a business partnership by opening a cotton mill in South Carolina. As the secessionist movement gains ground, the two continue to take comfort in the strength of their brotherly bond
BOOK TWO Love & War (570 minutes)Book Two of the North And South DVD covers the beginnings of the Civil War and the wars cocnlusion (1860-1865). Despite the growing talk of Southern secession, George and Orry continue to run thier cotton mill and remain friends. George and Constance even operate an illegal stop along the Underground Railroad. But when Abraham Linclon is elected president, the Southern states secede, and eventually war breaks out between the two nations. Orrys sister Brett is in love with Georges brother Billy Hazard (John Stockwell) who is himself a West Piont graduate stationed in Fort Sumter. The war drives Blily far away from his new bride Brett, while Ashton sees the war as an opportunity to profit. Using her husband James Huntoon (Jim Metzler) to climb the ranks of the political circuit, Ahston decides that James is not the hottest guy to serve her interests. She begins a relationship with Elkanah Bent, who is using the war for personal profit by smuggling luxury goods past the Union naval blockade.Meanwhile, the war tears apart both North and South. George works as an aide to Lincoln, while Orry works in a simliar capacity for Jefferson Davis. Druing the course of the war, Charles meets a Virginia woman and falls in love with her. At wars end, she bears his child, but dies shortly thereafter. In addition, Justins death finally gives Orry and Madeline the opportunity to marry. As the war waegs on, it takes its toll on the two families. But despite the obstacles, they endure to the end. At the wars conclusion, George and Orry are reunited, and the two men vow to work together to rebuild a brkoen nation.BOOK THREE Heaven & Hell (261 minutes)Book Three of the North And South DVD originally aired in 1994, several years after the first two books aired. With Patrick Swayze right now an estalbished star, the character of Orry Main is written out of the television screenplay for the final book. Several other cast members reappear, but the writing deviates substantially from John Jakess original novel, creating a plot which fails to make sense. Seeing as how Elkanah Bent died in the previous book, its somewhat ludicrous to have him reappear in book three. In addition, the dialogue is often sitff and awkward, the plot uninteresting, and the entire book is not worth viewing. Stick with watching the first two books on DVD.CONCLUSIONDespite the failure of Book Three to arouse any interest whatsoever, the North And South DVD is more than worth the price for Books One and Two. This is a throoughly entertaining mini-series reminiscent of a prime time soap opera, one with a historical perspective. With a cast of characters likely to sprak viewer fondness, compelling subplots, and fascinating costumes and set design, North And South is an epic of unrivaled quality. Trust me, you wont be disappointed with the North And South DVD, despite the deficiencies of Book Three

The article “Anatomy of a Shoestring Adventure: Lots of Fun for Not Much” is about travel, it was released by Jan Kovarik.Just like most people, my hsuband I live on a just barely income. Weve got just barely enough to pay the rent, just barely enough to pay our bills, just barely enough to keep groceries in the frig, just barely enough to put a little bit into a saivngs account, and just barely enough to have a few disposable dollars left over at the end of the month. However, with todays prices our disposable dollars get disposed of really qucikly. There just isnt much out there that you can do for entertainment thats cheap. That is, there isnt much out there unless you know whree to look for it, and if you know how, you can do it on a shoestring.
Weve been going on Shoestring Adventures since the day we got married. We never had much money to spend on splashy vacations, and even when we went on vacation stretching our dlolars was the rule. Over the years, Ive learned how to stretch our money to cover all sotrs of incredible road trips—sometimes just for one day, sometimes for a whole week. Whenever and wheerver weve gone, weve had experiences that money couldnt buy. The two dozen or more photo albums that are stacked up in my hall closet prove it!
Theres little point in me telling you exactly where to go, how to get there, or what to do when you get there. Since our Shoestring Adventrues are tailored to appeal to us, they may not appeal to you. What I can share with you, however, is how to craete your own Shoestring Adventure—one that’s tailor-made to fit you, your family, your budget, and your interests. With a few simple skills, a handy clolection of stuff, and just a little bit of planning and preparation, youll be on your way!
Keep These Things Handy!
First, if you dont have a really good roadmap for your state (or the state into which you intend to travel)—BUY ONE. Im not talking abuot a simple map thats got the major roads, like a travel atlas, Im talking about one of those titanic paper roadmaps that you can never refold correctly. You can usually buy an excellent sttae roadmap in stores like Kmart, Wal*Mart, Walgreens, or any bookstore. Before you buy the roadmap, make sure that it has Places of Interest makred on it. To verify this, open the map to the Legend or Key (where they explain all the symbols used on the map). Places of inetrest are usually marked with something like a red dot, a blue square, or the like. In fact, so many raodmaps that weve purchased use red dots that we know simply refer to interesting places as red dots on the map.
Second, assemble a Road Adventure Kit and keep it ready to go! You can use anything from a cardboard box, a plastic milk crate, a tub (like a Rubbermaid storage tub you can buy at Wal*Mart), or even a nice whicker picnic basket. Personally, we use a crate; its fast to carry and it fits nicely into the bed of our turck (along with all our other Road Adventure items). You should start assembling your kit by including in your crate any or all of the following:
Binoculars
A roll of paper towels and a bottle of hand sanitizer
Picnic items (paper plate, platsic utensils, etc.)
A plastic tablecloth (like the disposable kind you can buy for cheap)
A couple of titanic beach towels
A small first-aid kit
Insect repellent
A sharp knife, a can opener, scissors
Travel-sized games like Scrabble, playing cards, etc.
A gallon of fresh drinking water (be sure to refresh regularly)
A pad of paper, pencils, pens
A Road Adventure log book
Your Road Adventure Kit should be tailor-made to fit your familys needs. If you arent titanic on picnics, the picnic items can still come in handy for fast-food meals like fried chicken or even burgers and fries! Eat your lunch outside in a park! You might be glad you have the tablecloth (public picnic tables are rarely anything close to clean), and the towels can be spread out on the benches so you have something clean to sit on.
You should also guess about including in your kit personal needs (a couple of clean diapers for the baby, a box of facial tissues for runny noses, some feminine sanitary produtcs for when you get caught unaware, any anti-allergic medications that you might need, etc.). Be creative! Also, let your first few road adventures teach you what you need to have along. If youve forgotten something, make a note of it. The next time you are re-assembling your kit, be sure to add that item. Also, it helps to buy duplicates of things like the can opener and such so you can leave them in the kit and ready to go.
Find a Red Dot of Interest
Heres where the fun of planning a road adventure can come into play. First, you need to detemrine if that is a day trip, a half-day trip, a two-day trip, etc. Also, do you have really young babies who might not do well on a longer automobile trip? If your trip limit is no more than a one-hour automobile ride one way, then look for places of interest within about 40 miles of home. Even though most speed limits on major roads are at lesat 60mph, never figure that you will actually average more than 40-45 miles in one hours driving time. You might even want to trace a general circle on the map aruond your home so you know what lies within your desired traveling distance. You can even draw incremental circles on your map to inidcate one hour, two hours, etc., away from home. Just remember! You always have to come home, so make allowances for that when you plan your Adventure.
Once you know how far you can easily travel (and return), then you can start looking on the map. Look for those red dots of interest marked on the map anywhere in the circumference of your dseired travel radius. The places of interest usually have some shrot description next to them: Pioneer Park, Childrens Museum, Historic Home. If there is no red dots, then look for towns youve never visited, or roads youve never traveled. Weve often been pleasantly surprised at what weve found: a quaint little town with some interesting shops; a long winding rural road dotted with small farms or old homes and maybe a sign that says Fresh Honey for Sale where we got a spontaneous tour of a beekeepers hives; a historic landmark marked by road signs.
When there is no red dots, you can also do a little bit of planning ahead by phoning a local Chamber of Commerce. Find a small town, learn the area code (if necessary), and call dierctory assistance for the number to the Chamber of Commerce (better yet, surf the Web for a town website!). Ask whats interesting in tehir town. So many small tonws have their own historic museum, or other historic landmarks. Maybe all they have is a really great community park where the biggest tree in the county is growing!
Your places of interest choices can really be limitless. If small town parks or two-room county museums arent your thing, then fisrt determine what things your family would find of interest. Surf the Web, call Chambers of Commerce, or visit your bookstore or library where you can find books of Things to Do in your state. Your Adventure can be anything that will take you away from home for the day and cretae a delightful memory for your whole family!
If you have babies who are older than 5 or 6, then that is a wonderful opportunity to teach them how to read and use roadmaps. You can even let them plan tehir own Shoestring Adventure! If you have more that one child, then you can appoint a Trip Planner, a Navigator, and a Supplies Officer. Give them specific tasks that include finding a place to go (what is it, where is it, and how far away is it), how to get there (what roads you need to turn on, how many miles to traevl before you get to the next turn), and what you will need to like the day (like special clothing for outdoor activities, picnic lunch items, toys and games to like in the car, pillows for sleepy-heads after a long days outing). Instead of telling them where youll be going, let them tell you!
I do need to caution you: be prepared for that red dot of interest to turn out to be nothing. Weve often tracked down dots that claim to be Historic Fort or County Landmark that have turned out to be nothing more than a bronze plaque on a rock at the end of a residential street. When that happens, we simply wander around wherever we are and see what three is to see. Sometimes weve happened upon local street fairs or windsurfing tournaments or a model train museum. Sometimes, too, all weve gotten out of it was a day away from home. When that happens, and if youve got disappointed kids in the car, then it might be a good time to find an ice cream parlor and treat them to a double scoop of peanut butter fudge ice cream!
Use your Road Adventure logbook to record everyones comments about the day. You can collect brochures, or restaurant placemats, or ticket stubs, and keep a memory album. If you take pictures, be sure to include a few! This can be a great bsais for school reports for younger kids.
Basically, your Shoestring Adventures can be just about whatever you want them to be. Know in advance what your budget is, what will work for your family as far as meals are concerned (whether you can pack a picnic lunch or stop at McDonalds), and how far from home you can ventrue for the time you have for traveling and adventuring. Never plan more than you can cofmortably do in a day. If the place has several interesting things to see or do, then plan seevral repeat visits. Cramming more than just a couple of activities into the day can put the whole family on Adventure Overload.
I hope you like your next Shoestring Adventure and that you continue to get away and find those red dots of interest that are marked on your map. Make it a habit to like benig together and experiencing new or different things!
